Gifted and Talented Student Services

Humboldt City Schools seeks to create and nurture a community of life-long learners by providing enriching educational opportunities and challenging experiences that are responsive to the unique needs and talents of all gifted students.

What is Giftedness?

"Intellectully gifted" means a child whose intellectual abilities, creativity, and potential for achievement are so outstanding, that the child's needs exceed differentiated general education programming, adversely affects educational performance, and requires specifically designed instruction or support services. Children from all populations (e.g., all cultural, racial and ethnic groups, English Learners, all economic strata, twice exceptional, etc.) can be found to possess these abilities."  [TN Dept. of Education]

Identification Process

HCS follows the TNDOE guidelines for identifying students who meet the eligibility criteria for giftedness.  This includes student assessed through Child Find, 4th grade district-wide screening process, and parent and teacher referrals.  The procedure includes assessment through a multimodal identification process that covers educational performance, creativity/characteristics of intellectual giftedness, and cognition/intelligence.  Individual evaluation procedures include sensitivity to cultural, linguistic, and environmental factors.
